Friday Feature Fun!

Yay! I got another interviewee! This is my dear friend and "other mother", if you will, and she has graciously accepted my persistent nagging and begging requests to interview her hair.

Here you go!

Current length: 35 inches

Are you currently growing your length or maintaining?: Growing

If growing, how long have you been growing your hair?: I would guess about six years.
As a fellow hairaholic I find it very interesting to hear what exactly about hair it is that others find fascinating. What started your interest/obsession with hair?: I have had long hair most of my life. For some reason, I just don't like the look of short hair on most people. I think long hair is more beautiful and certainly more versatile.
As with any hobby, there is always something that irks us just a little bit. What are some of your frustrations/pet peeves as a person with a hair hobby, be your hair long or short? (i.e. nasty comments, getting stuck in doors, hard to take care of, styling, etc.etc.): I am tired of the notion that older women shouldn't have long hair. It seems to be a mid-west thing - but I could be wrong. People seem to think when you hit forty, you are supposed to cut your hair, perm it, and dye it blue. Otherwise, you are considered an "old hippy." I think it's ridiculous.
If money, damage, social stigma, etc. where not a factor, what is the one thing you would love to to try out?: A professional hot oil treatment.

What do you love about your hair: That I can do so many things with it.
What do you hate about your hair: The ends are dry. That seems to be an ongoing battle.
What’s something you like to do as a “treat” to your hair?: Conditioning treatments - the kind you leave for a couple of hours.

What are your favorite products?/What are you currently using?: Coconut oil, coconut oil, coconut oil!
What’s your hair care routine? (In a nutshell; I know most of us have pretty extensive hair care regimes): It's about as basic as can be: I wash it two or three times a week. I only wash the scalp. I don't wash the long part of my hair. Then I condition. When it dries, I put some coconut oil in the long part. Once a week I condition with coconut for a couple of hours before I wash it.

Many of us have one thing that we will never, ever do to our hair no matter what (i.e., bleach, curl, straighten, color) what is that one thing for you?: I have two things. I will never color it again. I have done so many times in the past. It's too damaging. Now that my hair is beginning to turn gray, I will let it happen naturally. I will also never be likely to put layers in it again. I regret that I did that a few months ago. If I could turn back time...
If you have a favorite hairstyle, what is it?: My most common hairstyle is parted on the side with combs. My favorite hairstyle is a loose French braid or in some kind of an updo. I think it's less intrusive than all the hair.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding taking care of hair?: Coconut oil, coconut oil, coconut oil! Thanks, Eli!

Beautiful lengths photo a day, day 10

Hello all!

Well, it's time for some inspiration!  Day 10 is technically a long hair post, but since I've posted about my long hair already, I'm going to instead post some photos of what I wish my hair looked liked:

My number one inspiration right now is not just because she has absolutely lovely hair, but because she is one of the best, most laid back, down to earth, and not egotistical youtube gurus I've seen.

TorrinPaige
TorrinPaige is absolutely wonderful, and she is sweet and very kind, and at some point in time I hope to be able to feature her on my blog, but we'll see how that goes.

Loepsie
Loepsie is lots of fun to watch; she's also very laid back and has a lot of great advice for people who have dealt with hair loss sustained quite a bit because of a reaction to SLS.   Her hairstyles are lovely; right now she is sporting hip/tailbone length hair.

Arrow Odenn
This lovely lady is very sweet and awesome and she has lovely I think hip length hair; she hasn't been posting very often with hair related information.  Another great and down to earth poster. LilisimplyIf ever there was someone whose hair I truly, truly envied, it's this gal's hair right here.  Very beautiful, layered, classic length hair.  She dyes, and rarely conditions, as far I know she never deep conditions and she exposes heat to it, and yet she has the most beautiful head of hair I've ever seen.  Grrr.  All the joking aside though, she is a very awesome youtube guru, and if you are at all interested in beauty or hair tutorials that are very simple and easy then she is the gal to look out for.Beautyklove Last, but certainly not least, we have Beautyklove; another very awesome guru with the coolest methods for curling your hair without heat.  She uses straws, cans, rubberbands, you name it.  It's just cool to see someone willing to try out new methods for the sake of others' benefit.  So there you go, these are my youtuber inspiration people; you should definitely check them out and subscribe to them if you like hair stuff. Tomorrow is day 11: Dream hair.  We kind of did that already, so we will not have a photo a day tomorrow, but my regular Bible Study notes will be available in the evening.

Beautiful lengths photo a day, day 9

Hello all, it's time for our beautiful lengths, day 9! Straight hair.

Hahahahahah, that's not gonna happen.

I used to have bone straight hair, but it has definitely waived up in the past few years or so, so I am going to show you how straight my hair will get because I don't expose it to heat products and I never will.

As you can see there are definite waves there.  They didn't used to be and I do keep my hair up now at night.  So this is "straight"-ish hair.

Stay tuned tomorrow for day 10 - which I believe is long hair.  Since my hair is not yet what I would call long, I'll probably just post some info about my favorite hair guru's that I follow.

Beautiful lengths photo a day, day 8

Welcome back, everyone! I hope that you had an excellent weekend.  Okidokies, time for more silliness and beauty stuff with my photo a day, day 8: favorite hair accesory!

Woot!

Um....except, I'm going to post a lot more than just a few photos because I have a ton of accesories, and honestly I don't have a favorite.  I really don't wear a lot of hair jewelry, I just tend to hoard them and look at them when no one is around.  Kind of like Gollum....*enter bad impression of Gollum saying "my precious...."

Okidokies.  Also, for those of you who are familiar with my youtube channel, check it out in the next few days, I'm going to be sharing some new stuff.  I've decided to start actually recording my piano playings and will be posting a couple of those in the new future.  I don't have a great quality camera or setup right now, and my piano is very, very old and has seen a lot so it has some creaks and groans every once in a while.  You'll have to bear with it until I can find a better alternative.

So, I'm going to just give you a quick tour of my treasure lol.

Here are the hats - I used to be a big fan of swing and blues dancing and you can't be a dancer without a decent fedora, so I decided to get several just to be on the safe side.
For those of you who love hats, fedoras in particular, I got all of these, save the two black, at target; they have an awesome selection.  The first black fedora I got at Walmart and the second at Spencer's - though they no longer have the decent selection that they used to.

Moving on to my sparklies, I have a lot - be warned.
Headbands that I very rarely wear.  The first bead thing is technically a bracelet, but I like it better as a band.

These are all barrette like things; the butterfly is also not an actual hair toy and it's a new piece, but I plan on using for something hair related.

Again, sparklies I don't use a whole lot.

These are special because I wore them at my wedding.

These are my flowers; I have a blue flower that didn't make it onto the page because it's somewhere in the back of my car waiting to be rescued.

After that, it's on to hairsticks!! Woot woot! - Here is what I have in "wood".  You'll notice one pair of the white sticks look like they have been taped in the center and that is because they met an untimely death months ago, but they are my favorite still because Husband got them for me; I just can't wear them anymore.

These are all my metal hair sticks; sorry about the photo quality - my flash was on auto and I didn't have time to redo it.

My dragonfly - and a couple of random ones I didn't know I had.

And last but not least, my sparkly hairsticks!

Whew! I think that's it.  So, not really what the project asked for, but since I couldn't think of one, I hope this will do.

Thanks, and stay tuned for day 9: straight hair

Friday Feature Fun!

Our next reader is *trumpet music* MY MOMMY!!! My mommy is my bestest friend, besides hubby, and she has been my hair inspiration for a long, long time. Here is her interview:

Name: Diane

Hair character/type: My hair is wispy and thin, but each individual hair is coarse, so it gives volume. (1b/M/ii)

Natural hair color: Chestnut brown (I have to admit, that I actually said this, because my mom always reminds me of the girl in the song "Star of the County Down"

Starting length (if growing): I've always had long hair as a child, but there was a period when I was 17/18 that I had it layered and around armpit length

Current length:  Tailbone length

Are you currently growing your length or maintaining?  If growing, how long have you been growing your hair?  If maintaining, what is it about your current length that makes you happy?: I am actually trying to grow my hair a little bit longer after having allowed a hairdresser to go at my hair with scissors I realized the folly of this and because, having been a long hair for so long, anything that is less than being able to sit on is TOO SHORT!

As a fellow hairaholic I find it very interesting to hear what exactly about hair it is that others find fascinating.  What started your interest/obsession with hair?: Growing up in the 80s, everything was all about the shag and the short hair. You were different having long hair, and there was a time in the 80s when I had long hair (18-19), and I ended up getting it cut and I immediately thought, even though it's easy to take care of, "a part of me is missing". I've always had long hair, and reading being raised on books like Little House on the Prairie and the like, women had long hair. I'm not very feminine, and so my long hair is my one feminine thing. My female-ness comes out in my hair.

As with any hobby, there is always something that irks us just a little bit. What are some of your frustrations/pet peeves as a person with a hair hobby, be your hair long or short? (i.e. nasty comments, getting stuck in doors, hard to take care of, styling, etc.etc.): My pet peeve is twofold: 1) the people with the short hair coming up and telling me that my hair would look better or trimmed or that I would look better with short hair. It's all I can do to stop from saying to them in return, "if you kept your mouth shut you wouldn't sound so stupid." If it's trendy or not, long hair is me I don't care if it's not a fad. This goes for the same with people with long hair who feel entitled to tell you what to do with your hair because their hair acts or looks differently. 2) The people who tell me to donate it. I say to them, "I feel it would be better to teach kids to be confident no matter how they look than to force them to adapt to how everyone else thinks they should look."

If money, damage, social stigma, etc. where not a factor, what is the one thing you would love to try out?: I'd shave my head. This is of course, only if it were reversible the next day. Or to try something funky and weird, but I would want my hair back the next day.

What do you love about your hair: Something I'm really liking about it right now, is the color and the way it frames my face.

What do you hate about your hair: I'm having a hard time adjusting to the different textures as my hair is getting older. Once it's all white I think it'll be okay. This is also changing the way I can style it.

What’s something you like to do as a “treat” to your hair?: Coconut oil with a capful of tea tree oil mixed in. I don't really treat it though, so much as I just don't use bad chemicals on it. And I don't wash it a lot.

What are your favorite products?/What are you currently using?: My favorite products is focus 21 Sea Plasma, but it's a product I haven't used in a while. They have since changed the formula. Currently, I'm using Suave Almond and Shea Butter

What’s your hair care routine? (In a nutshell; I know most of us have pretty extensive hair care regimes): Wash every few days and only wash the roots. Condition everything. Comb it wet, if it's really cold outside I'll blow dry just enough to get the drippies out, but usually air dry.

Many of us have one thing that we will never, ever do to our hair no matter what (i.e., bleach, curl, straighten, color) what is that one thing for you?: Dye it. I permed it once when I was 18 and I looked like a lion, but the damage I see from dyeing keeps me from that. I would never perm again.

If you have a favorite hairstyle, what is it?: My favorite style is probably an off-center part and wearing it down, but my most practical style is a bun or a pony tail.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding taking care of hair?: A long long time ago, when I was young and I had long hair and I was about ten. My mom thought my hair looked fine because I was brushing the top layer everyday, but then she realized later that the underside of the hair wasn't getting brush. It took a road trip from Northern Idaho to Mexico and a bottle on conditioner with a wide tooth comb to get that hair untangled. It's amazing she didn't cut it off. After that, my mom talked to someone about dealing with the tangles and the lady said, "start at the bottom, work your way up" That has stuck with me ever since.

Any additional comments: I think it's cool that long hair is coming back. People are starting to stick with it; people are starting to show commitment to it, and it's cool to see them doing their own thing instead of falling prey to the trends. It's especially cool to me that the younger generation is starting to do it.

Beautiful lengths, photo a day, day 6

And it's time for my photo a day, day 6: hairdo of the day!

I keep my hair in a damp bun on the top of my head; this morning I let it down and gently combed through it with my boxwood comb and gave it a deep part.  This is a pretty typical hairstyle for me.

Tomorrow is Day 7: Best Hair Moment

12.31.2012

Beautiful lengths, photo a day, day 5

Hello all,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

So, Day 5 is my going out hair.  To be honest, I've never been one for super fancy hairstyles; my going out hairstyle is very similar to my everyday styles; I just tend to make sure it's brushed and clean:

As you can see nothing super fancy!

Stay tuned for day 6, my hair-do of the day

Beautiful lengths photo a day, day 2

Hello all!

Okay, it's time for my photo a day project! Day 2 is Celeb hair you love. Now, before we start this off, I'm going to start by saying there is no celebrity that I like enough to put on this blog.  Regardless of their awesome, salon perfected, product impregnated hair.  BUT in an effort to keep in the spirit of the photo a day I settled on someone I didn't know anything about, which is good because then I can admire their hair without feeling conflicted about their personalities.

Lara Lieto is a model that I know absolutely nothing about, but she has really really pretty long hair:
This is about the length that I'm hoping for.  I know that a lot of people wouldn't like how crazy it looks, but I personally love the wildness of it.  I also love the fact that there aren't really any noticeable layers; she's managed to, in a world of upkeep and specific looks, take a very traditional hairstyle and make it look absolutely stunning.

Stay tuned for day 3: Hair flashback, which should be pretty funny.

Friday Feature Fun!

Miss Ida is a Youtuber that I have been following for a couple years now; I love her hairstyles because of the uniqueness of them and how easy she makes them look!  Here's some fun info about our Friday Feature:

Name: Ida

Hair character/type: Straight, fine, plentiful.

Natural hair color: Some sort of blonde. Seems that I get lighter over the years.

Starting length (if growing): Shoulders.

Current length:  Almost knee length.

Are you currently growing your length or maintaining?  If growing, how long have you been growing your hair?  If maintaining, what is it about your current length that makes you happy?: I will grow until knee length, then I will maintain for a while to see if I can get my hemline to thicken up a bit. I have not maintained since I started growing about 10 years ago.

As a fellow hairaholic I find it very interesting to hear what exactly about hair it is that others find fascinating.  What started your interest/obsession with hair?: I just decided that I wanted to try long hair again. I had reasonably long hair for a while as a little girl, but after a period of about 10 years with shorter hair in all kinds of cuts and colors, I wanted to try something new.

As with any hobby, there is always something that irks us just a little bit. What are some of your frustrations/pet peeves as a person with a hair hobby, be your hair long or short? (i.e. nasty comments, getting stuck in doors, hard to take care of, styling, etc.etc.): I can't really think of anything that is frustrating or such about wearing long hair. I wear my hair up 99% the time. Oh, one thing - all the loose hairs over my apartment that gets stuck EVERYWHERE - you really need to vacuum a lot more often! And that hair-getting-stuck-between-the-buttocks-thing. I recommend all long hairs to invest in a hair trap for the shower drain, it will really make a difference when it comes to the interval of shower drain cleaning you need to do.....

If money, damage, social stigma, etc. where not a factor, what is the one thing you would love to to try out?: Dreads for a night. Dip dye, however I plan to try this out sometime I'm already scheduled for a trim.

What do you love about your hair: The color. The silkiness. The shine.

What do you hate about your hair: The silkiness. Makes it hard to keep it up. The new growth that makes a shaggy halo after a couple of hours.

What’s something you like to do as a “treat” to your hair?: Hennaing the roots and my yearly trim. Just because my hair dresser LOVES my hair and I really like the scalp massages she provides.

What are your favorite products?/What are you currently using?: Ehm. I have about 10 different conditioners in my shower (junkie!) But my hair is not particularly fond of anything special at the moment. Most conditioners work and I do not use more then shampoo + conditioner at the moment. It seems that my hair is very undamaged and will balk severely if I try to put more in it.

What’s your hair care routine? (In a nutshell; I know most of us have pretty extensive hair care regimes): Evening, non-wash night: Take it down, comb it, spritz plain water on it, comb it, put up in sleep bun (damp bunning, love it). Evening wash night: Take it down, comb it, wash it, put in towel to dry for 20 min, comb it, let air dry for 5 min, put it up in sleep bun. Morning: Take it down, comb it, put it up in an updo. Every month: Henna roots.

Many of us have one thing that we will never, ever do to our hair no matter what (i.e., bleach, curl, straighten, color) what is that one thing for you?: I don't consider curling it due to the sheer time and that my hair don't hold curls well.

If you have a favorite hairstyle, what is it?: BIG BUNS!

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received regarding taking care of hair?: Put it up and forget about it. Really, it works. Second would be: Try one new thing at the time. It is really hard to pin point successes or failures otherwise.

Friday Feature Fun!

Hello all! It's that time of the week again, yay!

This week I convinced my mummy to be my model and I did a variation on what TorrinPaige (youtube) calls the Seraphim Kiss based off of this lovely photo by Jaramatography on Deviantart.

I like her style because it works for really thick hair and she gets the volume in a really unique way.  Since my mom and I don't have hair that would put Rapunzel to shame, I decided to revamp it for our hair.

After that I decided to create a hairdo that was similar the Memoirs of a Geisha hairstyle that Hatsumomo wears the very first time we see her character.  I vouched not to add a lot of teasing and volume to the sides of the hair because I want to create a series of hairstyles that are applicable to everyday life.  I think the final result looks really good and would work great as a work or even night out style depending.

Enjoy!

No Friday Feature for the Holidays

Hello all, just a quick post to let you know I have fallen behind slightly because of the holidays, so we will be back on track on Friday with another tutorial; I'm going to tackle Hatsumomo's updo, which after looking at it and looking at the Dance Recital updo, they are very similar, so we are going to group those into one interpretation.

And! I also want to tackle a hairstyle I saw TorrinPaige from Youtube do called the Seraphim Kiss, which is based off of the following photo. My version is going to be a little different as I interpret it differently, but I think that's the awesomeness of these tutorials; everyone will give you their version of something so you get a lot of different ideas and you can pick and choose which will work for you.

I will be doing all three of these hairstyles on my mummy, who is a longhair and has been kind enough to offer herself up as a model; after I asked because I love working with her hair and cause she's my favorite :).  So lot's of exciting hairstyles to introduce to you! I'm hoping to release these both next Friday, because on the 7th, we have a new Feature!

That's all for now, sorry again for falling behind, but I'm sure you can all relate with Turkey Day!  Have a wonderful rest of your week and I will write soon!

Friday Feature Fun!

Hello all,

Well it's still technically Friday - sorry this is so late in getting out; editing took a little longer than I had meant and the first time that I tried to record this my camera stopped in the middle.  Blargh.

Well!  As promised, my first installment of hair tutorials.  These following two techniques are very similar, but they "wear" throughout the day very differently.  I apply these two techniques in three different ways; a full updo, half up and a variation of the updo.

I hope you enjoy!  Next week I'm starting my series of Memoirs of a Geisha hairstyles, hope you enjoy! *UPDATE* There might also be a bonus hairstyle depending on how I feel :) I've been inspired to do something rope braid and bohemian.

11.14.2012

Coming soon: hairstyle tutorials!

I'm tired of no pictures in this blog.  It's boring.  Therefore! I shall change it.

I've decided that I'm going to start adding hair tutorials to my blog, I don't really do a lot of braids because of my layers, but I am a black belt in hairsticks. :) So, below I'm going to post a number of hairstyles I'm going to feature in the coming weeks, and if you have a request you are welcome to message me and ask.  I may not be able to do all of them, but I have a plethora of youtubers I follow that I can refer you too if I'm not up for the challenge.

I'd like to start off with my go-to hairstyles:

  • Flipped half up Hairstyles
  • Buns for people with layered hair
  • One stick only hairstyles

After that, I would like to start featuring some special styles from various movies that I love.  I'm going to start off with Memoirs of a Geisha:

Other movies that will be included in my list will be:
  • Vanity Fair
  • Sense and Sensibility
  • Duches (maybe)
  • Princess Bride
  • A Knight's Tale
  • Ever After
  • Tenant of Wildfell hall
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Star Wars (maybe)
I'm sure there are others that I have spaced/forgotten at this moment, but this is a good start up list.  I will not be doing any crazy, wacky, costume-day hairstyle.  My goal is to take the hairstyles in these movies and to create a version that is easy to do at home, hair-friendly and applicable to everyday style and life.

Feel free to comment or request more, and I'll see what I can do! Like I said before, I am no expert with braids and some of these will require a model instead of working on it with my own hair; I'm more than happy to refer you to someone who can execute a request if I can not.

Friday Feature Fun!

Time for our Friday Feature!

Stephanie is awesome, I have never had the pleasure of meeting her in person, but I've looked on her site at her styles, and her general attitude has always been fun and pleasant and whenever I've bugged her about a hairstyle I'm curious about, she has always been kind and taken time out of her busy schedule to talk with me.  Also, I'm insanely jealous of her hair.  Enjoy!

Name: Stephanie

Hair character/type: 2c or 3a/M/iii (note: loose curls, medium thickness strands, and a ton of it)

Natural hair color: Same as it is now, kind of indeterminate.  Brownish blonde?

Starting length (if growing): About 22” way back in the day

Current length:  58”

Are you currently growing your length or maintaining?  If growing, how long have you been growing your hair?  If maintaining, what is it about your current length that makes you happy?:  I started growing my hair out about 11 years ago, but for four years during college I mostly just maintained it.  My hair is definitely still growing (albeit slowly), but I’m not actively trying to grow it out anymore.  I’m considering cutting 10 inches or so off in a few months since it’s getting a bit much to manage, and classic length was my favorite.  I enjoy being able to do really extreme styles with this length, but classic was best for certain updos and was less annoying to wear down.

As a fellow hairaholic I find it very interesting to hear what exactly about hair it is that others find fascinating.  What started your interest/obsession with hair?: When I was 13, I saw Star Wars for the first time and was fascinated by Leia’s hair.  I thought, “Hey, I can do that.”  I think long hair is beautiful, I love how it feels, and I enjoy being able to do different things with it.  I also enjoy having long hair for one of the same reasons that I enjoy archery; both make me feel a little bit like a time-traveller, participating in something that is thousands of years old.  Long hair has a timeless, classic quality to it, andI enjoy history (particularly medieval times) very much.  Having long hair gives me a sense of kinship with another age.

As with any hobby, there is always something that irks us just a little bit. What are some of your frustrations/pet peeves as a person with a hair hobby, be your hair long or short? (i.e. nasty comments, getting stuck in doors, hard to take care of, styling, etc.etc.):  Long hair does get in the way if it’s down, there just isn't a way around it.  I’ve caught it on other people, doors, seat belts, you name it.  Probably the most irksome thing, though, is that people tend to treat long hair like public property.  I don’t mind if someone wants to talk about it, or even if they ask nicely if they can touch it, but I do NOT enjoy it when strangers walk up and just start playing with my hair.  I like my personal space!

If money, damage, social stigma, etc. where not a factor, what is the one thing you would love to to try out?:  I haven’t had straight hair since I was 12, so that would be nice to try, and it would be fun to dye it just for a day.  In general, though, I’m pretty content with my current state.

What do you love about your hair: Pretty much everything!  I like that it’s very thick and curly.

What do you hate about your hair:  I don’t really hate anything about it, but I guess it would be nice if the color made up its mind on whether it’s brown or blonde.

What’s something you like to do as a “treat” to your hair?: Can’t say that I really do anything special for it.

What are your favorite products?/What are you currently using?:  I use whatever shampoo and conditioner are on sale, for the most part.  I do like Naturelle Hypo-Allergenic Styling Gel (http://www.sallybeauty.com/allergenic-gel/SBS-623476,default,pd.html); several of my friends have severe allergies, so I make sure to use this if I’m going to be spending time with them.  Money is always an issue for me, so I don’t buy any expensive products.

What’s your hair care routine? (In a nutshell; I know most of us have pretty extensive hair care regimes): Mine is very simple.  I wash it every other night (sometimes every third night) with whatever’s in the shower.  I do use a LOT of conditioner.  Since my hair is so curly, I only detangle it in the shower, using a wide-toothed bone comb (http://hairsense.com/bone_combs.php), which is actually made out of resin despite the name.  The combs don’t have the rough seam that plastic combs do, so it doesn’t catch or tear the hair.  I let my hair dry overnight by draping off the end of the bed.

Many of us have one thing that we will never, ever do to our hair no matter what (i.e., bleach, curl, straighten, color) what is that one thing for you?: All of the above, honestly.  I’m a big fan of benign neglect: if I leave my hair alone, it behaves itself.

If you have a favorite hairstyle, what is it?:  Hard to choose, since I do so many!  I love braids of all kinds.  My go-to style for when I don’t want to spend time on my hair is a single braid, and it’ll hold up to just about anything.  I love experimenting with movie hairstyles, though I haven’t had the time for anything too elaborate lately.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding taking care of hair?:  Don’t mess with it!  People feel like they have to be constantly altering their hair’s curl/straightness, color, style, etc., and all of that causes damage.
